History
Kernan Flying School isn’t just a flying school — it’s a community.
We’re a local hub for people who share a love of adventure, freedom, and the unforgettable experience that flying brings.
When someone asks what you do in your spare time, be prepared for their jaw to drop when you casually say, “I fly.”
And flying in Northern Ireland? It’s something truly special. Every flight offers a new view, a new challenge, and a new reason to fall in love with the skies. As your skills grow, so does your appetite for exploration.
We’d love you to explore our website and get in touch — even if it’s just for a chat, a coffee, and a bit of craic. You’re always welcome.
Founded in 1999 by Raphael O’Carroll to share his passion for flight with like-minded enthusiasts, Kernan Flying School has earned a reputation for professionalism, friendliness, and an unbeatable flying experience.
Come join us — and discover the joy of flight.
The Crew
At Kernan, we know learning to become a pilot is a big undertaking in both time and money, so professionalism is our byword, but that's not to say we can't have fun while learning.
Kernan's instructors undergo the most rigorous training to become a flying instructor and this only after many hours of personal flying. They are independently checked and verified on a regular basis by the CAA, so you can be sure your always in safe hands.
Chief Flying Instructor & Examiner
Raphael "The Boss" optimises what flying small aircraft is about. a true pioneer in Microlight flying in Ireland and the founder of our company and club.
Raphael has over 30 years flying experience with over 6,000hrs of flying logged in his log book.
Here at Kernan we're lucky to have Raphael guiding everyone along and as our resident examiner we can guide you through the whole journey of you getting your wings.
Welcome to the Fleet
Here at Kernan, we have invested heavily in the optimum aircraft for learning to fly, the Ikarus C42, known as the BMW of the skies.
The "C42" is powered by a water cooled four stroke Rotax engine, again known for its reliability and dependability.
All our aircraft are factory built by Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved companies to a very high airworthiness standard.
All our maintenance is carried out by CAA approved inspectors, to ensure total confidence in our aircraft.
The C42 is more like conventional aircraft, using flaps, electric trim, heater, etc and cruises at 85 knots so you can enjoy your flight in comfort.

Flying Instructor Team
Here at Kernan as well has having multiple aircraft available 7 days a week, we also have 5 instructors ready to help you along the path of getting your licence.
All our instructors are fully CAA qualified and go through regular "off-site" training and tests to ensure they are current with all regulations.
Drop down to the club or give us a call to discuss the path to getting into the sky.
With over 200 pilots trained we have the experience to guide you through the journey to getting your pilots licence.
Our Facilities
Our clubhouse is well equipped with a full kitchen and plenty of space to share those "pilot" stories" and enjoy the craic.
We often have impromptu BBQ's during the summer where tall stories go on into the night.

Our Home Strip
We are lucky to have a tarmac runway at Kernan, 500mtrs in length so unlike many grass strips we can fly throughout the year.
